Multiplier is the slope factor for area. It applies to the roof surface — not to ridge, hip or eave lengths, which run along different planes.
How to use the multiplier
Measure the building footprint on the ground, including eave overhangs. Multiply length × width to get flat area, then multiply by the pitch factor.
Worked example: a 40 ft × 30 ft footprint is 1,200 sq ft. On a 6/12 roof, 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 sq ft of actual roof. That is 13.4 squares, and at three bundles per square you need 41 bundles before waste.
The gap widens fast as pitch increases. The same 1,200 sq ft footprint under a 12/12 roof is 1,697 sq ft — an extra 3.5 squares, or about 11 more bundles, purely from slope.
How to find your pitch without climbing up
- From inside the attic: hold a level horizontally against a rafter, mark 12 inches along it, then measure straight up to the rafter underside. That vertical measurement is your rise per 12.
- From the gable end: measure the total width of the building and the height from the top plate to the ridge. Pitch = (rise ÷ half the span) × 12.
- With a smartphone: most level apps report degrees. Convert with rise = tan(angle) × 12 — a 26.6° reading is a 6/12 roof.
- Never guess from a photograph. A 6/12 and an 8/12 look nearly identical from the street, and the difference is 7% of your material order.
Why pitch changes more than area
Pitch drives labour cost as much as material cost. Below 6/12 a crew walks the roof freely. From 7/12 they slow down, and at 8/12 and above most contractors add staging, roof jacks or harnesses, which typically adds 20–50% to the labour line.
Pitch also decides what you are allowed to install. Asphalt shingles are not permitted below 2/12 at all, and between 2/12 and 4/12 they require a doubled underlayment detail. Below 2/12 you need a membrane system — a completely different trade and budget.
Waste rises with complexity, not pitch alone. A steep simple gable can run 10% waste, while a shallow roof broken up by hips, valleys and dormers can exceed 18%.
